August 2019: Turntable sortation conveyor

Three straight conveyors
Three 10m conveyors

Sometimes, it's nice to have a simple, straightforwards conveyor belt, with no fancy robotic arms or fiddly transfer bits or anything.

This was a 30m long conveyor, (configured as three seperate - but linked - powered 10m conveyors) with a standard industrial 2-Ply PVC belt.

Turntable conveyor
An unexpected turntable !

Well, this one WAS like that, until the customer requested a turntable at the end !

Powered turntable
Round and round and round and round and round and.....

The idea was for a 30m long straight conveyor. Workers would have benches running along each side of the conveyor. When they had completed work on their package, they would put it onto the conveyor, wherein it would trundle down the conveyor, onto the turntable, and then go round and round and round and round and round and round until somebody takes pity on it and removes it for forwarding elsewhere.

Underslung central motors
Underslung motors central on each conveyor

Of course, it's impossible to transport a 30m conveyor anywhere, so it was actually three 10m conveyors. In order for packages to seamlessly transfer from one 10m section to the other, the end rollers had to be very small (to minimise the air gap). This meant that we couldn't have the usual drive motor at the end of each conveyor; instead, it required underslung central drive modules halfway along each conveyor.

Even so, the turntable - at 3m in diameter - was too wide to fit onto a standard lorry, and we had to use "abnormal load" proceedures with escort vans and flashing lights ! Great fun !!

We've got a rather wobbly video of the unit being tested... enjoy :)
